To cut to the chase: this pack is everything I’d hoped it would be, and then some.
I bought the Arrowhead ECO rolltop to serve as the latest in a string of packs I use to haul my lunch, laptop, and various other stuff to and from work. Because that “other stuff” varies in quantity from day to day, and because I wanted a way to easily stash a jacket (or snow boots, etc) when the weather changes, I really wanted a rolltop pack. To be honest, I wasn’t really that taken with the design of the Arrowhead from what I could see on the website, and I thought the big side pockets on the ECO version looked kinda clumsy. In practice, though, I am totally sold on the design and the ECO pockets are super useful.
I’ve been using the pack daily for two weeks, and am very impressed.
What do I like?
* as everyone writes in their reviews, the build quality is absolutely top-notch. From what I’ve seen so far, I expect that this pack will last me a decade of daily trips. And if the straps (I opted for the cotton webbing) wear out, I know I can replace them.
* the size is perfect for my needs. I got the narrow width (12") Arrowhead and was worried it might be a bit small, but it swallows food, water bottles, laptop, tablet, books/papers, and an extra layer with ease — and I have yet to use the rolltop at full extension.
* it carries much more comfortably than I was expecting for a frameless pack with a short torso length (in a backpacking pack, I want about a 21” torso length; this pack is about 14"). I typically carry 15-20 lbs, and the Arrowhead rides very comfortably on my back/shoulders.
* the organizing options are far better than I expected. The big reason I picked the ECO over the standard Arrowhead was actually for the internal slip pocket rather than the external ECO pockets. The slip pocket works exactly as I’d hoped — putting my laptop or tablet in there provides overall structure to the pack and keeps it flat against my back. But this pack also gives me the external ECO pockets for water bottles and a whole range of other things; the 2-in-1 slip pockets between the big ECO pockets and the pack body are big enough to stash a collapsible umbrella; and there’s also a small interior zip pocket and two more small slip pockets on the inside of the pack in the same location that the ECO 2-in-1s are on the outside. Simply excellent for organizing the stuff I want to carry without the need for lots of zipped pockets like you find on mainstream nylon commuter packs.
Simply the most satisfied I’ve been with a pack in forty-plus years of buying them.
