More Than Decor: The Canoes in Our

Ceiling and the Stories They Tell

Adorning the ceiling of our shop is a collection of canoes that one may call a little bit eclectic but we think they are quite interesting as each one has a story to tell. From garage sale finds to galavanting across the Arctic Circle, each of these canoes is unique in its own way and each has had a different journey to their current home, hanging from the rafters. Read on for some of our favorites and what makes them special.

Stewart River Saganaga Canoe

Alex actually built this canoe right here in the store during the early days of when we first moved into this building. It is the only canoe in the shop with a price tag on it. If you are looking for a beautifully crafted cedar strip canoe, you can't go wrong with Stewart River. Alex typically has a 1-2 year waitlist for his hand-built canoes –– and it's easy to see why. These canoes are truly remarkable. If you don't want to wait for a custom build, this canoe is for sale and ready to hit the water.

The Cranberry Cow

Believed to be a boat used on a cranberry bog, it has been dubbed by many as the "Cranberry Cow" because of its unique shape and bright red color. Chris picked this one up on ebay in early 2020 after coming across it and realizing he has never seen anything quite like it. Mounted on the back is a 1940s Johnson outboard motor.

Frost River Merrimack Canoe

Easily one of the prettiest canoes in our collection, this beauty was crafted for us by our friends at Merrimack Canoes. Made from cedar strip and Kevlar, it blends the best of both worlds –– lightweight yet strong. We got this one when they first started adding graphics to the floors of their canoes, making it even more special. Though we cherish this canoe, it still gets in the water from time to time –– just as all great canoes should.

Cliff Jacobson's Canoe

One of Cliff's canoes that he was gracious enough to let us hang onto, this boat has seen some serious adventure –– including a trip to the Arctic Circle. Outfitted for whitewater, it features a spray skirt to keep you dry as well as foam padding on the base if you need to get lower to weather some waves, this canoe is ready to weather some rough conditions.
