Description

Our Geologist Pack takes the classic knapsack design—drawstring top, flap cover, simple shape—and builds it stronger, larger, and more functional. Made by hand in Duluth, it features rugged bridle leather shoulder straps, a roomy main compartment, and quick-access front pockets secured with brass Sam Browne posts.

Waxed canvas construction sheds weather and grows character with use, while premium leather and solid brass hardware ensure this pack lasts a lifetime. It’s as reliable as the rucksacks carried into Minnesota’s iron country a century ago, yet perfectly suited for modern use whether you’re chasing trails, paddling to camp, or commuting across town.

      Raw Reliability

Roaming the North Country in search of Iron Ore can lead an intrepid young geologist into all sorts of adventure. James Byron Hustad was known as J.B.H. had explored Minnesota’s Iron Range in search of underground deposits for U.S. Steel in the middle of the last century. Equipped with his trusty “rucksack” he would often travel by canoe or float plane into secluded roadless areas. Our Geologist Daypack is modeled after the pack that J.B.H. carried on many of his explorations in the U.S. and Canada, Brazil and Africa.

This pack blends simplicity with durability: a drawstring-topped main compartment, leather-strapped flap, and two front pockets secured by brass Sam Brown posts. The bridle leather shoulder straps break in over time, fitting your frame like an old friend. Built from weather-resistant waxed canvas and reinforced with premium leather and solid brass hardware, it’s a heritage pack tough enough for modern adventures.

Order not accepted at first due to automated mistake, but fixed immediately

It got delayed due to systems believing my payment was a scam, but issue was rectified quickly and I didnt have to do any more than just call to fix it.

    Very excellent backpack, thank you!

I'd been shopping for a perfect everything bag—travel, law school, hiking, and my daily round as a local journalist—and this backpack does it all. While I haven't had it for long enough to tell how it will hold up to long-term use, the construction quality is clearly top notch, and it's in this sizing sweet spot (forgive the alliteration) where it's usable for both a weeklong European trip—I pack relatively light—and for day to day things without looking overlarge or clunky. This was a big expense for me, but it seems like I made a wise investment in this pack, especially considering the generous guarantees that Frost River includes on their gear. Further, given its quality—which again, is obvious when you handle the bag in person—it actually seems very fairly priced, when compared with other brands and considering that it is manufactured in the US.
Another thing I like about it is the styling. While this bag wouldn't look out of place on a hiking trail, it also has a vintage charm, reminiscent of older Ralph Lauren bags, and it looks good whether you're wearing a blazer or a goretex shell.
I'm very pleased with my purchase, and I expect to own this backpack for the rest of my life, if I can keep it in good shape. It certainly seems as though it'll last that long. The straps do take some time to break in, but it's surprisingly comfortable to me.

    Bought as an everything backpack

I acquired the bag very recently and the materials feel sturdy all around. It works as well outdoors on hikes as it does in the office with a 14 inch laptop in a sleeve. Very happy with the purchase.

    Love it

This is a great pack. If I would change anything I would make the straps softer and easier put on.
