Description

Crafted for the adventurers who brave the snow and cold, the Empire Builder Mittens pay tribute to the legendary Empire Builder railroad line, a symbol of rugged determination and pioneering spirit. These mittens are designed to handle the harshest winter weather, much like the iconic trains that forged a path through America’s untamed wilderness.

Built with our tough, water-resistant 18oz waxed canvas and reinforced buckskin leather palms, these mittens are built to endure. The buckskin, sourced from the heart of the Midwest, provides a secure grip—perfect for chopping firewood, hauling gear, riding the rope-tow, or just keeping your hands warm while waiting for that first cup of camp coffee to brew. Inside, the mittens are lined with soft fleece, wrapping your hands in warmth and comfort, while a wrist cinch ensures a snug fit that seals out the chill.

The Empire Builder railroad, which first set out in 1929, was named after James J. Hill, the visionary tycoon who expanded America’s railways westward. Stretching from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest, it carried passengers through snow-choked passes and across vast plains, bringing them closer to the frontiers they dared to explore. These mittens, like the trains of that era, are built to withstand the elements and keep on going, season after season.

Whether you’re trekking through snow-covered woods, shoveling the driveway, or simply savoring a quiet winter morning, the Empire Builder Mittens are your trusted companions for the coldest days. They’re more than just mittens—they’re a nod to history, crafted to last a lifetime. Built for the modern explorer, yet inspired by the spirit of the past. Slip into a pair and embrace the winter—there’s a whole world waiting beyond the snowdrifts.

Yes!! More of this.

These are the real deal. Frost River should be using their 18oz fabric for all of their gear. I’m glad I got the XL before they stopped making them because they barely fit onto my hands. But they’re nice and tight around the wrists. They take a little breaking in. Leather is soft and flexible. I haven’t put it through its paces yet and don’t know how it’ll hold up using an ace and carrying wood all day. Marketed towards skiers and snowboarders, but I’m gonna beat them up in the woods during remote northern Michigan camping. Please continue to give us bombproof BIFL USA made gear.
